It
is a tradition prior
to any creation of buildings or infrastructure of merit, villagers
and participants need to give thanks for the opportunity they have
received.
On the coastal plain of Kenya, the culture is a mix of Arab and
African influences over many centuries. Consequently, in our ceremony
of
thanks, we can observe the use of the Koran, the use of salt, peppers
and rice to ward off spirits that may harm us, and in good keeping
with the probable origin of such ceremonies, the hallal slaugher
of goats.
Here are a few selected images of the initiation ceremony shortly
before breaking ground for construction, on the 14th August 2005.
